Tigers drop two to West Georgia

CARRROLLTON, Ga. — The University of West Alabama softball team was swept in a Gulf South Conference Eastern Division doubleheader, losing 3-0 and 10-0 to West Georgia at Oil Park.

In the opener, West Alabama (21-22 overall, 1-9 GSC) had three hits and were led at the plate by Emily White, who went 2-for-3, including a double. West Georgia (21-21, 5-5) finished with three runs on four hits, while taking advantage of three Tiger errors.

Emily White (8-10) started on the mound for West Alabama in the first game, pitching six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits and had six strikeouts. 

The Wolves scored a run in the third inning to break a scoreless tie.

With one out in the inning, Mary Carlisle tripled down the right-field line. Kim Weaver walked and then stole second. Adrienne Clay reached on an error by Tigers shortstop Sheila Jordan, allowing Carlisle to score from third. Emily White got Jessie Wise to ground out to shortstop and Jamie Van Haltern to ground out to third to end the inning.

West Georgia added a pair of runs in the fifth inning to grab a 3-0 lead.

Weaver reached on an error by West Alabama second baseman Laura Bagwell to begin the inning and Clay reached on a fielder’s choice. Both runners advanced on stolen bases, and Van Haltern ripped a one-out double to left-center to plate Weaver and Clay.

The Tigers had a chance to cut the deficit in the sixth inning, but stranded two on base.

Bagwell reached base on a one-out walk and advanced to second on an infield single by Jordan. After a pitching change, Shannon Goggins struck out and Heather Shugart grounded out to second to end the threat.

Kacie Crider (4-5) took the win for the Wolves. She pitched 5 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Kate Thompson worked 1 1/3 innings of relief.

In the second game, the Tigers had five hits and an error. West Georgia scored 10 runs on 12 hits in a game called after six innings because of the mercy rule.

Collecting hits for the Tigers were Bagwell, Jordan, Shugart, Emily White (1-for-3) and Alisha Berry (1-for-2).

Aubree Hudson (9-9) started on the mound for West Alabama, pitching three innings. She gave up four runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Amanda Bintz and Brittany McGee pitched in relief.

The Wolves got a two-out solo home run in the first inning by Weaver to grab a 1-0 lead.

West Georgia added to the lead in the third by scoring three times.

Candice Brown led off the inning with a base hit up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carlisle. Weaver reached on an infield single, moving Brown to third. After a stolen base by Weaver, Clay singled up the middle to score Weaver and Brown. Wise followed with a hit through the left side, moving Clay to second. Van Haltern reached on a fielder’s choice as Wise advanced to second and Clay was out at third. Paige Hanson singled to left, scoring Clay for the final run of the inning.

The Wolves scored two more runs in the fourth and four in the sixth inning to get the 10-0 victory.

Thompson (12-8) pitched six innings to get the win for West Georgia. She scattered five hits, while fanning three.

The Tigers return to action 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 2 at the UWA Softball Complex in a non-conference doubleheader against Judson College.
