LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The
University of West Alabama
dropped a pair to the University
of North Alabama on Sunday
afternoon at the UWA Softball
Complex, falling 12-8 and 10-1.
Game one
saw a total of 29 hits between
the two teams in which a
combined 20 runs were scored.
UNA (19-17,
4-0 GSC) posted five runs in the
second and added another four in
the third before UWA got on the
scoreboard.
Sheila
Jordan started the Tigers off,
hitting a one out shot to the
shortstop and moved up to second
on a Shannon Goggins single up
the middle. Heather Shugart
followed up with a homerun to
left field to cut the Lion lead
to six.
The Tigers
plated two more in the fourth to
pull the contest to within four.
Jennifer started the rally with
a one out, double to left field
and advanced to third on a
throw. Laura Bagwell followed
with a single to right field to
place runners on the corners
with one out. Jordan would
ground out to second base, but
moved Bagwell up to second base.
A Shannon Goggins single to left
field plated both UWA runs as
Goggins advanced to third on a
throw. Shugart again placed
runners on the corners for the
Tigers, but Emily White would
strike out swinging to end the
inning.
UNA
answered the Tiger, two-run
inning with three of its own to
push the lead back out to 12-5
through 4 ½ innings of action.
UWA again
plated a run in the bottom of
the fifth to cut into the UNA
deficit.
With two
down, Krista Merrifield singled
through the left side and scored
as Jennifer Lillard doubled to
right field.
The Tigers
added two runs in the sixth as
Jordan led off with a double to
right field. Shugart would then
hit a one out, two-run homer
over center field to narrow the
margin, closing out the UWA
runs.
Emily White
(8-6) received the loss with 2
1/3 innings of work in the
circle, giving up seven runs on
eight hits. Sabrina Roberts
(8-2) picked up the win with six
innings of action, allowing
eight runs on 13 hits.
Game two
saw UNA again take an early
advantage in the contest,
plating two runs in its first
and bat and one more in the
second inning.
UWA cut the
lead down to two with its first
run in the fourth inning.
Samantha White reached base on a
two-out walk and scored one
batter later as Lillard doubled
down the left field line.
UNA added
two more in the fifth to
increase its lead to 5-1, before
exploding for five runs in the
sixth to close out the scoring
effort for the Lions
Aubree
Hudson (7-7) took the loss with
5 1/3 innings of work, allowing
10 runs on nine hits. Stephanie
Glienke (5-4) received the win,
throwing in all six innings and
allowing five hits and recording
five strike outs.
West
Alabama returns to action on
Thursday, March 22, as the
Tigers travel to Judson for a
1:00 p.m. first pitch.
