LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
softball team dropped two Gulf South Conference
games as the Tigers fell to the University of
Alabama in Huntsville, 2-0 and 14-5 on Saturday
afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex.
A tight affair
in the first game of the doubleheader saw UAH
(23-6, 2-0 GSC) get on the board first in the
third inning.
Anna Parker
led the Lady Charger inning off with a single to
left field, but was erased on a one out, Megan
Blanchard fielder’s choice. Blanchard would
advance to third base on a Jenny Hess single to
right field as Hess later moved up to second on
a stolen base. Sydney Simpson hit a laser to
first base that escaped from the Tigers,
allowing Blanchard and Hess to score.
The two runs
were all the Lady Chargers needed as Sage
Woodham pitched all seven innings, allowing only
two UWA hits, from Heather Shugart and Jennifer
Lillard, while striking out nine Tiger batters.
Emily White
received the loss in the circle throwing six
innings allowing six hits and striking out two
UAH batters.
Game two of
the doubleheader saw the Lady Chargers plate
runs in all five innings, including an eight
run, fifth inning.
UAH, which led
5-0 heading into the fourth inning, plated its
sixth as Parker reached base on a one out walk
and score on a Caroline Weatherly double to left
field.
The Tigers cut
into the lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Emily White led off the inning with a homerun to
right center. Following a Corey Curlee ground
out, Alisha Berry was hit by a pitch. Berry
moved up to second on a stolen base following a
Krista Merrifield strike out. Jennifer Lillard
doubled to right field to score Berry, pulling
UWA within four runs.
The Lady
Chargers came back to the plate an answered the
Tigers two runs with eight of its own in the top
of the fifth.
Trailing 14-2,
UWA mounted a comeback in the bottom of the
fifth. Samantha White, who pinch hit for Sheila
Jordan, led the inning off with a single to
right field. Jordan replaced White and scored on
a Shannon Goggins homerun to center field. With
one out, Emily White homered to right center,
but that would be all the runs for UWA in the
game.
Sarah Beth
Medley earned the win, pitching 4 1/3 innings,
allowing four runs on five hits and striking out
five Tigers. Aubree Hudson received the loss
with 3 1/3 innings of work, allowing six runs on
five hits.
