– University of West
Alabama senior softball player
Heather Shugart received a pair of
honors Thursday afternoon.
Shugart,
who broke the Tigers’ single-season
home run record by belting 21
dingers, was one of 14 players from
the Gulf South Conference selected
to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA
Division II All-Region Team by
earning First-Team honors. She was
also named to the All-South Region
Second Team.
Shugart, an
outfielder from Pinson, Ala., was
selected to the Gulf South
Conference East Division First Team
after batting .401 on the season
with 73 hits, 73 RBIs, 14 doubles
and a career-high and a season-high
21 home runs.
During her
four-year career, Shugart finished
second in career home runs with 32
and was fourth in RBIs (104). This
season, she had her most productive
year, breaking single-season school
records in RBIs (73), slugging
percentage (.824) and home runs
(21). She also owns the school’s
longest hit streak in West Alabama
history with 22.
Joining Shugart
from the conference on the first
team on the Louisville Slugger/NFCA
Division II All-Region Team were
Sage Woodham (UAH), Alex Costa (VSU),
Meredith Heckel (UAM), Jenny Dunn (UAM)
and Jenny Hess (UAH). |
