UWA gets split with Judson College

Game 1 Box/Game 2 Box

LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- The University of West Alabama softball team broke out of a four-game skid by splitting with Judson College Monday afternoon at the UWA Softball Complex as the Tigers dropped the first game, 6-4, but bounced back with a 12-4 victory in six innings in the second contest.

Brittany McGee (3-2) started on the mound in the second game, working five innings. She gave up four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts. Amanda Bintz pitched an inning of relief with a strikeout.

The Tigers (22-23) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 1-0 lead.

Laura Bagwell, who went 1-for-1, walked to lead off the inning, but was thrown out trying to steal second. With two outs, Shannon Goggins doubled to right field and scored on a Heather Shugart double.

Judson tied the game at 1 in the top of the second, but West Alabama responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead.

Shugart, who was 3-for-4, reached on an error with one out in the third inning. Emily White, who went 2-for-4, drilled a home run to right center to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Eagles (6-16) answered with a run in the fourth, but West Alabama remained in front by scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Bagwell walked and advanced to second on a Corey Curlee sacrifice bunt. Bagwell took third and scored on wild pitches. With two outs, Shugart connected for her team-leading 19th home run of the season, giving the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

Judson plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tigers put the game away with a five-run inning in the bottom half.

Mary Wright led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Krista Merrifield. Alisha Berry, who was 2-for-3, ripped a base hit to center, to move Wright to third. After a stolen base by Berry, Bagwell walked to load the bases. Curlee followed with a base on balls, scoring Wright from third.

Goggins, who was 2-for-4, doubled to left-center, scoring Berry and Bagwell. Shugart followed with an RBI single to right and Emily White flied out to center, scoring Goggins for the final run of the inning.

Katie Eubanks took the loss, pitching four innings. She gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits with six walks.

In the opener, Emily White (8-11) took the loss, pitching 6 2/3 innings. She gave up six runs (four earned) on nine hits, with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

The Lady Eagles struck first, scoring three runs in the second inning.

Katie Eubanks walked and Ashley Glass followed with a two-run home run to center, giving Judson a 2-0 lead. Elyse McIntyre singled to right and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Misty Jones. Emilee King singled to center, advancing McIntyre to third. McIntyre scored on a fielder’s choice by Anna Billingham.

West Alabama cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth inning.

Merrifield singled through the right side to begin the inning and advanced to second on a bunt base hit by Berry. Merrifield scored when Sheila Jordan flied out to second and scored on a fielding error by Lady Eagles’ catcher Glass.

Judson added two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to take a 6-1 into the bottom of the seventh.

Berry, who went 2-for-3, reached on an infield hit to begin the inning. Bagwell was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Jordan, who was 2-for-4, doubled to the wall in left-center, scoring Berry and Bagwell. Jordan advanced to third on the play and scored on a one-out base hit up the middle by Shugart. With two outs, Jennifer Lillard, who was 1-for-3, doubled down the right-field line to put the tying run at second and the winning run at the plate. Curlee flied out to the pitcher to end the scoring threat.

Bailey Bounds took the win, pitching six innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on eight hits. Katie Eubanks worked an inning of relief in getting the save.

West Alabama returns to action 4:00 p.m. Friday, April 6 at North Alabama and then travel to Huntsville, Ala., the following day to play UAH.
