UWA earns split during 2nd day action

DECATUR, Ala. – For the second consecutive day, the University of West Alabama softball team split a pair of games at the Gulf South Conference Crossover, losing the opener to Henderson State, 6-0, and beating Christian Brothers, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Wilson-Morgan Softball Complex.

In the second contest, Aubree Hudson (10-9) pitched for West Alabama (24-29 overall, 3-15 GSC). She gave up two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

The Lady Buccaneers (13-19, 5-14) got things started in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs on three hits. Christian Brothers break the 0-0 tie as Hannah Shackelford singled and then stole second. Meagan Shackleford singled up the middle as Shackelford scored from second. Shackelford gave Christian Brothers a 2-0 as she scored from second on a ground rule double to left by Lauren Zavelli.

In the bottom half of the inning, West Alabama put runners on base as Krista Merrifield drew a one-out walk and Alisha Berry singled through the right side. But Laura Bagwell popped up to first and Jordan flied out to left to end the scoring threat.

Shannon Goggins drilled her 14th home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, cutting the Christian Brothers deficit to 2-1. 

In the bottom of the fifth inning, West Alabama scored four runs on three hits to grab a 5-2 lead.

Jennifer Lillard began the frame with a walk. Mary Wright came in to pinch run for Lillard and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Merrifield. Berry reached on an infield hit, moving Wright to third with one out. Berry stole second and Bagwell followed with a walk to load the bases. Jordan singled through the left side, plating Wright and Berry to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. Goggins reached on a fielder’s choice as Bagwell was tagged out while trying to score on the play. Heather Shugart ripped a two-out base hit through the left side, scoring Jordan and Goggins to give West Alabama a 5-2 advantage.

Dunn (9-10) pitched six innings for the Lady Buccaneers. She surrendered five runs (all earned) on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Emily White (9-14) started on the mound in the opener, working back-to-back starts for West Alabama. The sophomore struggled early as Henderson State loaded the bases in the first inning but couldn’t get a run across. The Lady Reddies broke the scoreless tie in the third inning.

Tori Gast walked to lead off the frame and scored on a two-out double by Haylee Williams to put Henderson State in front, 1-0.

The Lady Reddies added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning.

With one out in the inning, Jackie Darnstaedt reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaci Yount. Darnstaedt moved to third on a fielder’s choice by Kelcie Glidden. After a stolen base by Glidden, Gast doubled to center, plating Darnstaedt and Glidden. Jeaniel Pati followed with a double down the left-field line, scoring Gast, giving Henderson State a 4-0 lead.

The Lady Reddies scored twice in the fifth to grab a 6-0 advantage.

Emily White pitched five innings, surrendering six runs (four earned) on nine hits. She had a pair of walks and five strikeouts. Brittany McGee worked two innings of relief with three strikeouts. 

Katie Corbell (9-4) got the win for Henderson State (19-11, 11-9). She pitched seven innings, giving up a pair of hits as Sheila Jordan and Emily White reached base on singles.

The Tigers face off 12:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14 against Delta State at Wilson-Morgan Softball Complex.
