Shugart, Goggins earn Gulf South Conference honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of West Alabama senior softball players Heather Shugart and Shannon Goggins wrapped up their careers by earning Gulf South Conference honors as announced by the conference office Thursday night.

Shugart, an outfielder from Pinson, Ala., was selected to the Gulf South Conference East Division First Team after batting .401 on the season with 73 hits, 73 RBIs, 14 doubles and a career-high and a season-high 21 home runs.

During her four-year career, Shugart finished second in career home runs with 32 and was fourth in RBIs (104). This season, she had her most productive year, breaking single-season school records in RBIs (73), slugging percentage (.824) and home runs (21). She also owns the school’s longest hit streak in West Alabama history with 22.

Goggins, a third baseman from Alabaster, Ala., was named to the Gulf South Conference East Division Second Team after batting .337 with 62 RBIs, 61 hits, 16 home runs, 12 doubles and a pair of triples.

During her four-year stint in a Tigers uniform, Goggins, who was also selected to the GSC First Team in 2004 and 2005, tied the single-season school record for runs scored in a season with 48.

In the career record book at West Alabama, Goggins sits in the top three in seven offensive categories. She is first in RBIs (148), home runs (45), sacrifice flies (8), slugging percentage (.833) and total bases (418). Goggins is second in hits (189) and third in runs scored (116).

Garnering Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Year honors was Valdosta State’s Alex Acosta. Co-Pitchers of the Year on the East side were Sage Woodham (UAH and Brianna Collis (Valdosta State).

Also earning awards was Gulf South Conference East Freshmen of the Year was Candice Brown of West Georgia. Thomas Marcera was selected the Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year.
