Carvel Rowell
Football and Baseball
(1962-1966)
Carvel Rowell played both
football and baseball for West Alabama from 1962-66. Rowell
ranked third in the nation for football in total offense in 1966
and led the Tigers in hitting four years. Rowell was
All-Conference in both sports and led the Tigers to three
straight conference crowns in baseball. He signed a free-agent
contract with the Houston Oilers in 1966. He later coached nine
years at the high school level, winning a State Championship in
football at Excel High School in 1969 and a State Championship
in baseball at Thomasville High in 1972.

Tony Holmes
Football
(1971-1975)
Tony Holmes,
a native of Lowndesboro, Ala., played football at UWA in 1971
and from 1973-75 at offensive guard. Holmes was a member of the
1971 NAIA National Championship team and the 1975 team that
finished third in the nation. He was named All-GSC in 1973 and
1975 and was a member of UWA’s Team of the Decade for the
1970’s. He was an Honorable-Mention All-American in 1975, and
was the recipient of the “Phil Puccio” Award, which goes to the
football player that demonstrates the most leadership and
dedication each season. Holmes spent one year as a coach at
Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, Ala. |
