MARSHALL, Mo. – The University of West
Alabama Wranglers competed in their first
rodeo of the 2007-08 season at Missouri
Valley College over the weekend.
Carissa
Purvis finished second in the average in the
breakaway roping with a total of 120 points.
Sydney Bailey made it to the short round in
goat tying, as Deanna Mixon qualified in the
barrel racing.
“Carissa
roped well this weekend. She will be a
contender for the end of the year
championship,” said rodeo coach Chad Phipps.
“Sydney and Deanne had good runs, but had a
little trouble that kept her from placing.
Everyone showed promise and I’m looking for
huge things in the weeks to come from the
women’s team.”
On the
men’s side, Alex Caudle, in his first
collegiate rodeo, finished one spot out of
the short go round in the calf roping, while
Daniel Poole and Tyler Earwood both turned
in solid rides in the bull riding
competition.
“I think
Alex got in a little bit of hurry, being his
first collegiate rodeo, but he will be the
guy to watch for the rest of the season,”
said Phipps. “Daniel rode his first bull and
was awarded a re-ride, after his bull didn’t
perform. He took a score of 60 off the board
in order to better himself. That showed a
lot of heart to me. We only have three
competitors’ right now, but it’s three that
can win. I’m looking for big things out of
these guys in the next rodeos.”
The UWA
wranglers will return to action on Thursday,
September 27th at the Southern
Arkansas rodeo in Magnolia, Ark. The rodeo
will conclude on Saturday, September 29th.
