MURRAY, Ky. –
The University of
West Alabama
wranglers took part
in the 34th annual
Murray State
University College
Rodeo at the Murray
State Expo Center
over the weekend
with both the men’s
and women’s teams
claiming fifth
place.
Ace Campbell
accounted for 175 of
the UWA men’s 395
total points.
Campbell, a
Robertsdale,
Ala.-native,
finished third in
steer wrestling and
garnered a pair of
fifth place finishes
in team and calf
roping to conclude
his showing.
“We had a good
rodeo, but not
everyone can do well
at once. We are just
inconsistent in
every event,” Head
Coach Chad Phipps
said. “I think some
of it has to do with
we have not got to
practice that much
this fall on the
account of the
weather, but we have
no excuses.”
Austin Davis claimed
a second place
finish in steer
wrestling and teamed
with Campbell in
team roping for a
fifth place finish.
Jerrett Varner
teamed up with
Garrett Moore from
Troy in the event to
garner 180 total
points. Tray
Chambliss rounded
out the men’s side
with a fifth place
finish in bareback
riding with 70
points.
Kaitlin St. Clair
picked up all 130
points for the UWA
women with a second
place finish in
barrel racing.
At the end of the
fall schedule, the
UWA men are third in
the Ozark region
with 1,840 total
points with the
women in seventh
with 315 total
points.
“I am not satisfied
with were we are in
the standings,
because I know we
can do better,”
Phipps added.
“Hopefully we will
come out and do
better in the spring
and finish the year
strong. We have had
a decent fall
season, but we are
so much stronger
than we have showed.
The season is half
over, but we are not
out. We are too good
of a team not to be
higher in the
regional rankings.”
