LIVINGSTON, AL— The West
Alabama softball team dropped a pair of games Tuesday, losing to William
Carey 5-4 and 13-2 at the UWA Softball Complex on Senior Day. Debbie Shisler started on the mound
in the opener and the freshman pitched seven innings, giving up five
runs on 11 hits in taking the loss. West Alabama trailed 2-1 going into
the bottom of the sixth, but rally for three runs. Shisler led off the
inning with a double and scored on a bunt by Sydney Sneed. Heather
Shugart drilled a 1-2 pitch off Lady Crusaders starter Devin King to
give the Tigers a 4-2 lead, with both runs coming with two outs. Shisler paced the Tigers offense by
going 3-for-4 at the plate. Sneed, Shannon Goggins, Shugart and Rochelle
Thomas each had hits. But in the top of the seventh, Jill
Wedgeworth and Shelly Berry led off the inning with hits and Megan
Dawson hit a three-run homer to left to give William Carey a 5-4 lead. King pitched seven innings, giving
up four runs on seven hits. Offensively, Dawson finished by going
3-for-4 with five RBIs. Meghan James had three hits, while Berry and
Wedgeworth each had two. In the second game, William Carey
(21-19) took a 4-1 lead into the top of the seventh and scored nine
runs. Wedgeworth led the Lady Crusaders at the plate with three hits and
four RBIs, including a grand slam homer. Brittany Ladner had a home run,
plating two. Ladner picked up the win, despite
pitching 4.1 innings. She gave up a run on five hits, while Brittany
Fuller worked 2.2 innings, giving up a run on two hits. Aubree Hudson started for the Tigers
(14-35), working four innings, giving up four runs on five hits.
Brittany McGee and Shisler pitched in relief. Offensively, West Alabama
had seven hits, with Laura Bagwell, Corey Curlee, Shannon Goggins,
Shugart, Joanna Hynde, Alisa Berry and Shelia Jordan each having one. West Alabama travels Friday, April 29 to Lincoln Memorial for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. The Tigers conclude the season the following day, April 30, with two games at Lincoln Memorial. |
