West Alabama softball ends season with pair of losses

HARROGATE, TN — The West Alabama softball team concluded its season Sunday afternoon at Neely Field, losing both games of a Gulf South Conference doubleheader to Lincoln Memorial, 9-0 and 11-1.

The Tigers finished the season at 14-39 overall and 4-28 in the GSC.

In the opener, West Alabama used two pitchers – Debbie Shisler and Emily White, but it wasn’t enough to stop the offensive output of the Lady Railsplitters in a game called after five innings because of the NCAA eight-run rule.

Shisler pitched 3.1 innings in taking the loss. The freshman pitcher gave up four runs on four hits, while White surrendered five runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Shisler had the lone hit for the Tigers.

Lincoln Memorial had eight hits, led at the plate by a 3-for-4 performance by Alisa Burk, who had a pair of home runs. Chelsie McNew was 2-for-3, with a homer and drove in four.

Brittney Walker worked five innings, striking out four in getting her 21st victory of the season.

In the second game, West Alabama scored a run on three hits, but it wasn’t enough as the game was called after the second because of the eight-run rule.

Aubree Hudson started for the Tigers, pitching four innings, giving up eight runs on 11 hits. Brittany McGee finished the game by surrendering three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of action.

Jess Butrica had the only extra-base hit – a double, while Corey Curlee and Heather Shugart had hits.

Kelly Click got the win, working four innings, giving up a run on two hits. Jessica Stewart pitched an inning in relief.

Lincoln Memorial pounded out 14 hits, led by Danielle Sowders with four hits and Amanda Wampler with three. Kristen Hutchinson had a home run and was 2-for-4 at the plate with six RBIs.
