West Alabama tops OBU; falls to Delta State

DECATUR, AL The West Alabama softball team earned a split on the final day of the Gulf South Conference Crossover as the Tigers beat Ouachita Baptist 6-5, but fell to Delta State 4-2 Sunday at Morgan-Wilson Park.

Against Ouachita Baptist, the Tigers pounded out eight hits and were led at the plate by Corey Curlee (2-for-3 with two RBIs), Rochelle Thomas (2-for-3 with two RBIs), Heather Shugart (1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs), Debbie Shisler and Robin Halbrooks (1-for-3) and Alisha Berry (1-for-2).

Aubree Hudson pitched six innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits, while Brittany McGee worked the final inning in getting the save.

Beth McGhee started for Ouachita Baptist as she lasted four innings, giving up two runs, three hits, seven walks and a strikeout. Shannon McMurry took the loss in pitching two innings as she gave up four runs on five hits.

Lauren Western paced the offensive attack for Ouachita Baptist by going 3-for-4 and Amanda Loyd and Cindy Gonzalez were each 2-for-3.

In the opening game of the day for West Alabama, the Tigers got a solid pitching performance by Shisler, but couldn't knock off Delta State.

Shisler, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI at the plate, pitched seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits in taking the loss.

West Alabama had 10 hits as Curlee, Shugart and Sydney Sneed each had a pair, while Joanna Hynde and Laura Bagwell finished with just one hit.

Randa Blenden worked just two innings for Delta State as she gave up two runs on eight hits. Britni Adcox pitched five innings and got the win in allowing no runs on two hits.

Bre Myers paced Delta State's offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

West Alabama plays at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2006 against West Florida at the UWA Softball Complex.
