Rally falls short in Tigers loss to Valdosta State

Box Score

VALDOSTA, Ga. – A late 12-1 run by the University of West Alabama men’s basketball team wasn’t enough, as the Tigers fell to Valdosta State, 57-50, at the Valdosta State P.E. Complex on Saturday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference contest.

West Alabama (10-15 overall, 3-7 Gulf South Conference) was led by a double-double from Stan Gill, who recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds. Raymond Shaw added 15 points for the Tigers.

Mike Crain was the only player in double figures for VSU (19-6, 7-3 Gulf South Conference), posting 21 points on the night.

The Blazers, who opened the game on a 23-4 run, led at intermission 29-13. Valdosta State kept the 16-point advantage midway through the second half and even pushed it to a 22-point lead with eight minutes to play in the game.

The Tigers, who shot 29-percent from the field on the game, began to chip away at the Blazers' lead. With under two minutes to play, West Alabama pulled to within 12 points. Two 3-pointers by Shaw and a dunk from Patrick Winters cut the Valdosta State advantage to seven points, but time ran out on the Tigers.

West Alabama returns to action on Monday, Feb. 19, as the Tigers will look to snap a three-game skid at West Florida. Tip-off is schedule for 7:30 p.m. and can be heard on WZNJ-FM 106.5 and athletics.uwa.edu.
