Former Tiger Joe Eatmon Named Men's Hoops Assistant Coach

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  The University of West Alabama Department of Athletics has announced the hiring of Joe Eatmon as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, effective July 1.  He takes over assistant coaching duties for Phillip Shumpert who resigned in May.

Eatmon is a familiar face within the UWA men’s hoops program, as he played two seasons in the Red and White from 2005-07 under former head coach Rick Reedy.  The Tuscaloosa, Ala.-native also served as Graduate Assistant Coach on the UWA staff in the Fall of 2007 before taking a full-time job at Livingston High School.  Eatmon returns to UWA after coaching two seasons in the Linden City School system.  At Linden he coached boy’s basketball and football along with teaching physical education.

As a Tiger, Eatmon played in 51 games during his two-year stint, scoring 357 points in his career.  He proved to be a threat from the perimeter for UWA, shooting .313 from behind the three-point arc.  Prior to arriving in Livingston, Eatmon played for Coach Chris Trawick at Bevill State Community College, where he averaged 12 points per game.  Following his playing days, Eatmon was the recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority Enhancement Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in Athletics to continue his education.  He earned a Masters in Education with an emphasis in Physical Education this past Spring at UWA.  Eatmon also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from UWA, which he received in 2007.

Off the court, Eatmon was a member of the Alpha Phi Fraternity and was the men’s basketball representative of UWA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.  His academic accolades included a spot on the Gulf South Conference All-Academic Team along with being named Who’s Who Among College Athletes.  Eatmon was also selected the Pi Delta Chapter of Alpha Pi Alpha Athlete of the Year.

Eatmon is married to the former Erica Yates.  They have one son, Joseph, Jr.
