LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama Department of Athletics
has announced the hiring of Joe Eatmon as Assistant
Men’s Basketball Coach, effective July 1. He takes over
assistant coaching duties for Phillip Shumpert who
resigned in May.
Eatmon is a
familiar face within the UWA men’s hoops program, as he
played two seasons in the Red and White from 2005-07
under former head coach Rick Reedy. The Tuscaloosa,
Ala.-native also served as Graduate Assistant Coach on
the UWA staff in the Fall of 2007 before taking a
full-time job at Livingston High School. Eatmon returns
to UWA after coaching two seasons in the Linden City
School system. At Linden he coached boy’s basketball
and football along with teaching physical education.
As a Tiger, Eatmon
played in 51 games during his two-year stint, scoring
357 points in his career. He proved to be a threat from
the perimeter for UWA, shooting .313 from behind the
three-point arc. Prior to arriving in Livingston,
Eatmon played for Coach Chris Trawick at Bevill State
Community College, where he averaged 12 points per
game. Following his playing days, Eatmon was the
recipient of the NCAA Ethnic Minority Enhancement
Program Postgraduate Scholarship for Careers in
Athletics to continue his education. He earned a
Masters in Education with an emphasis in Physical
Education this past Spring at UWA. Eatmon also holds a
Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from
UWA, which he received in 2007.
Off the court,
Eatmon was a member of the Alpha Phi Fraternity and was
the men’s basketball representative of UWA’s
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. His academic
accolades included a spot on the Gulf South Conference
All-Academic Team along with being named Who’s Who Among
College Athletes. Eatmon was also selected the Pi Delta
Chapter of Alpha Pi Alpha Athlete of the Year.
Eatmon is married
to the former Erica Yates. They have one son, Joseph,
Jr.
