BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama’s Jason
Swanson earned First Team All-Gulf South Conference
honors in men’s hoops in 2008-09 as announced by the
conference office.
Swanson, a junior transfer from Shelton State Community
College, led the Tigers in scoring with a 15.2 scoring
average this season. The Troy, Ala.-native was a thorn
in the opposition’s side all season, scoring in double
figures in 23 games this season, including a streak of
19 consecutive games with double digit points. Swanson
was credited with nine double-doubles on the season and
flirted with a triple-double on three occasions. He
posted a season-best 27 points in UWA’s double overtime
affair at Valdosta State. The 27-point effort was his
sixth 20-plus point performance of the season.
Swanson becomes the first Tiger to earn All-Conference
accolades since former UWA standout Stan Gill in
20005-06. With Swanson’s selection to the First Team
All-GSC, it marks the first time since 2001-02 that the
Red and White have had a selection on the First Team.
UWA’s Richard Stone was tabbed to the conference’s top
team.
Swanson and the Tigers begin their quest for a GSC
Championship on Wednesday, March 4, in the opening round
of the GSC Tournament in Southaven, Miss. at the DeSoto
Civic Center against Harding. Tip off is set for 7:30
p.m. The game will be broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM. All
