PENSACOLA, Fla. – The West Alabama
Tigers remained in contention for a Gulf
South Conference Tournament berth on
Monday night with a 60-49 win over West
Florida on the UWF campus.
Coupled with Valdosta State’s 81-66 win
over Montevallo, the Tigers can clinch
the final spot on the East side of the
bracket with a win over the Falcons on
Saturday, March 1, at Pruitt Hall. Tip
off is set for 4 p.m.
The
Tigers took their second lead of the
final half at the 13:35 mark at 41-40
and never looked back thanks to a great
defensive effort by the Red and White.
UWA held the Argonauts to just 30
percent from the field in the final
period, connecting on just seven made
baskets in the final stanza. UWA
countered the defensive effort with a 50
percent shooting mark in the second half
and out-rebounded UWF 44-30 in the
contest. The Tigers avenged a 12-point
66-54 win by the Green and White at
Pruitt Hall on the UWA campus. The Red
and White have won all three GSC
contests on the floor of the opponent
this season.
UWA
put four players in double figures in
scoring, led by junior Brian Murphy’s
17-point performance and 10 rebound
effort. Senior Layton Knight poured in
12 points and was credited with eight
rebounds along with four steals in the
affair. He also dished out five
assists.
UWA
returns home on Saturday, March 1,
hosting in-state rival Montevallo. Tip
off is set for 4 p.m. at Pruitt Hall.
The game will be one of the many
activities in conjunction with UWA’s
Super Tiger Day.
