LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team dropped its second Gulf
South Conference tilt against West
Georgia, 77-64 on Monday night at Pruitt
Hall to close out the first weekend of
league activity for UWA.
The Tigers (5-10, 0-2
GSC) held two slim margins of two points
twice to open the game but fell behind
and had to play catch up for 35 minutes
of the game. The Wolves jumped out to a
seven-point advantage at the 12:55 mark
of the stanza. UWA cut the deficit to
one point on two occasions on the next
four minutes of action. UWG (9-5, 2-0
GSC) out-scored the Red and White 8-3 to
push the margin to 10 points at the
halftime break. UWG’s Terrance Hundley
connected on 6-of-8 from the field in
the first half to lead the Wolves
offensive charge with 16 points in 14
minutes in the opening frame. The
Tigers clamped down on Hundley, holding
him scoreless in the second period.
UWG extended the
margin out to as many as 12 points at
the 8:51 mark of the second half, but
the Tigers clawed their way back into
the ballgame on Tyler Roden’s three
pointer that trimmed the lead down to
six at 66-60. Roden, whose father,
Craig Roden, coaches the UWG women’s
squad. He finished with a season-best
eight points in the setback. UWG sealed
its second GSC win on the road after
topping Montevallo on Saturday in the
final minutes of the game.
UWA senior Michael
Billings led all Tiger scorers with 13
points. Billings also pulled down six
boards and dished out six assists.
Chris Malone posted nine points in the
affair. Kevin Johnson added eight
points.
UWG’s Paul Harper
shared game-high scoring honors with
Hundley, carding 16 points. Doug
Daniels and Sheldon Harris each posted
15 points respectively.
The Tigers will hit
the road to face in-state rival North
Alabama on Monday, Jan. 21. Tip off is
set for 8 p.m. on the UNA campus. The
game will be carried on Y104.9 and on
the official UWA Athletic web site –
www.athletics.uwa.edu. Air time will
start with the women’s broadcast,
followed by the men’s contest.
