Tigers come up short at Montevallo

Final Box Score

Montevallo, Ala. – The University of West Alabama men’s basketball team nearly pulled off an upset, but Montevallo stole one out, with an 83-75 victory over the Tigers in a Gulf South Conference game Saturday at the Peoples Bank & Trust Arena.

Raymond Shaw scored 11 of his team-high 20 points in the first half and also finished with nine rebounds. Stan Gill added 17 points, while Joe Eatmon had 12.

West Alabama (8-12 overall, 2-4 GSC) controlled the first few minutes of the second half, but Montevallo regrouped and took a 51-43 lead, forcing Reedy to call timeout with 13:58 remaining. The Tigers trimmed away at the lead and after a steal by Michael Billings, Joe Eatmon drained a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 54-52 lead with 10 minutes left.

The two teams continued to trade the lead, before the Falcons took a 70-61 advantage after a 3-pointer by No. 5 with 3:50 left. West Alabama used a 7-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Gill. That was as close as West Alabama would get.

Greg Brown scored 16 of his game-high 30 points in the first half, while Marcus Kennedy added 20 points and 12 boards.

The Tigers return home to play Concordia College 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at Pruitt Hall.
