LIVINGSTON, Ala. —
Sophomore Guard Chris Malone drained a
three pointer at the buzzer to give the
University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team a thrilling 65-62 win
over Arkansas at Monticello at Pruitt
Hall Thursday night.
Malone, who finished with nine points in
the contest, also connected on the
game-tying trey with just 17 seconds
left in the game. The Birmingham,
Ala.-native finished three of four from
behind the arc. The Tigers, who trailed
by 10 at the halftime break, chipped
away at the Boll Weevil lead throughout
the final 20 minutes and trailed by six
with just over a minute left in the
game. The Red and White outscored the
Green and White 14-5 over the final
minute and a half. The UWA scoring
spurt was sparked by Glenn Miles, who
scored six of his final 12 points during
that span. The Tigers held UAM in check
in the final 20 minutes, holding it to
just 29 percent from the field while UWA
(5-7) registered a 55 percent clip in
the final stanza. The Tigers avenged a
four-point setback to UAM earlier in the
campaign in Monticello, Ark.
The
Tigers were led in the scoring column by
Maurice Naylor with a game-high 16
points. The Meridian, Miss- junior was
two rebounds shy of posting a
double-double. Michael Billings and
Kevin Johnson each carded eight points
apiece.
UAM
(6-4), who led by as many as 12 points
early in the second half, was led by
Derek Easter, who turned in 15 points in
the setback. Current Gulf South
Conference Western Division Player of
the Week, Raymond Wright posted 12
points for UAM.
UWA
will trek to Cleveland, Miss. on
Saturday, Jan. 5, to face Delta State at
4 p.m. The game will be carried on the
radio at Y 104.9 and on the official UWA
Athletic website at
www.athletics.uwa.edu. The Tigers
return home to open the GSC slate on
Saturday, Jan. 12 against Alabama at
Huntsville.
