FORT MYERS,
Fla. — Stan Gill finished one
rebound shy of a double-double Sunday afternoon
as the Tigers snapped a two-game skid with a
65-62 victory over Palm Beach Atlantic during
the final day of the Florida Gulf Coast
Basketball Tournament.
Gill, a senior
forward, paced West Alabama’s offense with a
game-high 21 points and pulled down nine
rebounds. Senior Raymond Shaw added 11 points
and 11 rebounds, while senior Jared Hembree
finished with 11 points and six boards.
The Tigers
(3-3) shot 32.4 percent (11-of-34) during the
first half, but were 12-of-26 in the second half
and finished by shooting 38.3 percent. Palm
Beach Atlantic made just nine field goals during
the first half and was 22 of 52 shooting for the
game.
With the game
tied at 5, West Alabama used an 11-3 run, capped
by a Joe Eatmon 3-pointer with 12:47 remaining
in the first half to grab a 16-8 lead. Palm
Beach Atlantic took the lead with 6:07 left in
the half on a jumper by Anthony Fitzroy, and
held a 29-28 lead at the break.
The Tigers
opened the second half with a 15-10 run, capped
by a Hembree 3-pointer to take a 43-39 lead with
11:44 remaining. Palm Beach Atlantic kept the
game close during the final three minutes, but
West Alabama sealed the victory by going 8-of-12
from the free-throw line down the stretch to get
the victory.
Derek Barnes
paced Palm Beach Atlantic (1-3) with 19 points,
while Sean Tucker added 13.
West Alabama
returns home for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at Pruitt
Hall Wednesday, November 29 against Claflin. |
