LIVINGSTON, Ala. —The
University of West Alabama’s bid to
reach to the Gulf South Conference Men’s
Basketball Tournament fell short with a
69-56 setback to in-state rival
Montevallo on Saturday at Pruitt Hall.
The winner of the contest earned the
final spot from the GSC East into the
league event.
With the 13-point
win, the Falcons (12-15, 5-7 GSC)
avenged a 73-62 win by the Tigers on
UM’s home floor. The Purple and Gold
turned in a 55 percent shooting night
and forced 18 UWA (10-17, 3-9 GSC)
miscues in the affair. The Falcons
started hot from the floor and never
looked back, starting the game shooting
63 percent in the opening half. UM
pushed its lead out to 11-2 at the 15:32
mark of the first half and expanded out
to as many as 15 points on three
occasions and carried that margin into
the halftime break at 39-24.
Anthony Brown led the
offensive output for UM with a game-high
17 points. Terrill Humphrey, who did
not play in the first meeting with UWA,
finished with 16 points.
Junior Tyler Roden
came off the bench to lead the Red and
White in scoring with nine points, all
on three-pointers. Three Tigers added
eight points apiece – Brian Murphy,
Layton Knight and Cavin Payton. The
setback closes the book on the 2007-08
season with a final mark of 10-17 and
3-9 in GSC competition. Prior to the
contest, UWA honored its four seniors –
Michael Billings, Knight, Abdoulaye
N’diaye and Taige Adderley.
