LIVINGSTON --
The University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team had its two-game win
streak snapped with a 74-59 setback
to Henderson State on Saturday
afternoon on the UWA campus.
The Tigers came into the game having
wins against Southeastern Bible and
Clark Atlanta before the Christmas
holiday, but cold shooting by the
Red and White played a large factor
in the loss. UWA finished the game
shooting just 36 percent from the
field along with 23 turnovers. The
Reddies, who picked up their second
win of the season, turned in a 50
percent shooting performance in the
15-point win. UWA held its largest
lead of six at 11-5 early in the
first half. HSU took its first lead
of the game at the 11:46 mark and
never trailed the rest of the game.
The Tigers evened the score at 21
apiece with just 5:07 left in the
opening frame. The Reddies carried
a 30-23 lead into the halftime
break.
In the second half, HSU built out
its lead to double figures four
minutes into the final period and
extended the lead out to a game-high
17-points. The Tigers trimmed the
deficit down to nine after going on
an 8-0 run with 4:18 remaining.
Senior guard Layton Knight led the
Tiger charge, scoring 15 points off
the bench, connecting on 7-of-9 from
the field. Senior Chris Malone
turned in a 14-point performance.
Kevin Johnson added 10 points along
with a team-high five rebounds.
HSU’s Antoine Jones led all scorers
with 22 points in the affair. Jones
was one of four Reddie players to
post double figure scoring. Lucas
Whisenhunt turned in 15 points while
Daniel Hurst and Jerome Wilson each
added 11 points apiece.
UWA will host Arkansas at Monticello
on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. The
Tigers dropped the first match up
between the two squads earlier in
the season in Monticello.
