LIVINGSTON, Ala. –The University of
West Alabama men’s basketball team
closed out the non-conference slate with
a 62-57 win over in-state for Concordia
College out of Selma, Ala. The win was
the seventh non-conference decision of
the 2007-08 season and third-straight
win since topping Montevallo on Saturday
night.
Junior Maurice Naylor, who finished with
a game-high 18 points, knocked down
three critical shots in the final fives
minutes of the game to extend the Tigers
slim three-point margin out to seven
points on two occasions. UWA’s Michael
Billings also drained three free throws
in the last two minutes to secure the
five-point victory. Naylor, connected
on 8 of-11 shots from the field and
pulled down five boards. The Meridian,
Miss.-product was credited with two
steals in the affair. The Tigers took
their largest lead of the second period
at 39-30; the Hornets went on a 7-0 run
to trim the lead down to a basket at the
17:08 mark of the final half.
The
Tigers took a seven-point 37-30 lead
into the intermission and led by as many
as 11 points at the 3:45 mark of the
opening frame. UWA shot 60 percent from
the field in the first 20 minutes, while
clamping down on the Hornets, holding
them to just 37 percent from the field.
Junior Brian Murphy registered his
third-straight double figure scoring
night, posting 10 points. Junior Glenn
Miles pulled down a game-high 14
rebounds in the contest, 10 on the
defense end of the floor. The
Birmingham, Ala.-native added four
points and dished out three assists and
had four steals.
UWA returns to Gulf
South Conference action on Monday, Feb.
11, welcoming North Alabama to Pruitt
Hall. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.
