ATLANTA, Ga. —The
University of West Alabama men’s
basketball team will carry a two-game
winning streak into the Christmas break
after claiming a 66-61 win on the road
at Clark Atlanta on Tuesday night.
The Tigers, who
notched their fourth victory of the
season, led from wire-to-wire in the
contest. UWA jumped out to its largest
lead of nine points at 19-8 with 8:14 to
play in the opening half. The
homestanding Panthers would make a
charge in the final eight minutes of the
first half, out-scoring the Red and
White 10-3 over an eight-minute span.
UWA took a one-point advantage into the
dressing room at 24-23.
In the final period,
UWA pushed its lead back out to eight
points at 40-32 at the 12:36 mark of the
half. The Tigers owned their largest
margin of 11 points near the midway
point of the final period. UWA cut down
on the miscues that plagued it in the
opening half, having just turned the
ball over six times in the final frame.
The Red and White had 10 turnovers in
the opening half. Junior Kevin Johnson
had 12 of his game-high 17 points in the
second half. Maurice Naylor registered
a double-double with 14 points and a
game-high 12 rebounds. Ten of his
rebounds came on the defensive end of
the floor. Playing in his first game as
a UWA Tiger, Glenn Miles poured in 11
points in a team-high 37 minutes of
action. The Birmingham, Ala.-native
dished out six assists and had three
steals to his credit.
CAU (2-4) was led by
Najee Lane with 15 points. Niinotrey
Annag came off the bench to add 10
points in the setback.
The Tigers will break
for the Christmas holiday before taking
on Gulf South Conference foe Henderson
State on Saturday, Dec. 29. Tip off is
set for 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall on the UWA
campus.
