CARROLLTON,
Ga. – The University of West
Alabama football team had a two-game
win streak snapped in a 10-9 loss at
West Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 24.
The loss extends the Tigers’ (5-4,
3-3 Gulf South Conference) losing
streak at UWG (1-7, 1-5 GSC) to
eight games.
The Tigers
accumulated 426 yards of total
offense as UWG gained 250 yards of
offense. UWA finished with 247 yards
through the air, behind the arm of
Deon Williams, and 179 on the
ground. The Wolves rushed for 155
yards as a team, led by 171 yards by
Yusuf Holloway.
UWA jumped on
the scoreboard first as Brock Sharp
connected on a 25 yard field goal on
the Red and White’s first drive of
the game. The field goal capped a 12
play, 74 yard drive that erased 5:26
off the clock. Evan Shipp put the
Tigers up 9-0 as he hauled in a 25
yard touchdown pass from Deon
Williams, ending a two play, 42 yard
drive that took 30 seconds off the
clock. The score, which was Shipp’s
first TD of the season, was set up
on a fumble by UWG starting
quarterback Sean Gray. The 9-0 UWA
lead held until the half.
UWG put its
first points on the board, scoring
on its first drive of the second
half. Adi Brkic booted a 42 yard
field goal through the uprights,
pulling the Wolves within a six
points. The Red and Blue then
knotted the game at 9-9 on its
second possession of the second half
as Brandon Behenna found Matt
O’Brien for a 15 yard TD pass. Brkic
put the Wolves up 10-9 connecting on
the PAT.
DeAntuan
Matthews led the UWA defense with 12
total tackles, including two for
losses.
West Alabama
returns to action on Saturday, Oct.
31 as UWA hosts Ouachita Baptist in
Homecoming 2009. Kickoff is set for
5:00 p.m. The game will be
