LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of
West Alabama football team looks to
return to the win column as UWA (3-1,
1-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to
Valdosta State on Saturday, Sept. 26 for
GSC action. The game will be aired on
FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at
athletics.uwa.edu. A free video stream
of the contest will be available at
www.vstateblazers.tv.
This is the 28th meeting in the series
between West Alabama and Valdosta State.
The Blazers lead the series 26-1,
including 23 straight wins over the
Tigers. UWA seeks its first win in
Valdosta in school history. The last
meeting in the Azalea City was a 16-14
win for VSU on Oct. 21, 2006.
Both teams enter the contest following
GSC losses last week. The Tigers dropped
a five overtime decision, 38-30, at
Southern Arkansas in the GSC Game of the
Week. UWA and SAU fought through a
scoreless first, three quarters of the
game. Both teams posted touchdowns late
in the fourth quarter before heading
into the five extra sessions. The Red
and White tallied 439 yards of total
offense in the game, which ranks eighth
under UWA head coach Bobby Wallace.
VSU
dropped a 24-14 decision at Ouachita
Baptist on Saturday. The loss was the
second for the Blazers this season and
their first in GSC play. The setback was
the sixth for the Red and Black in the
three seasons under David Dean. VSU
allowed 502 yards of offense in loss.
UWA
and the Blazers are each ranked in the
top 30 in pass offense. The Red and
White are ranked 22nd in the
NCAA with VSU at 27th. Tiger
signal caller Deon Williams is ranked
fifth in the GSC in pass yards per game
with 248.2 while VSU field captain
Kellen Lewis, who is ranked eighth in
the conference, is averaging 209.3 yards
per contest.
West Alabama returns
to Tiger Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3 to
face Lambuth in the first of a
three-game homestand. Kickoff has been
rescheduled for 4:00 p.m. The original
start was slated for 6:00 p.m. The game
will be carried on FOX Sports, WSLY
104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.
