UWA Continues GSC Action At Valdosta State

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team looks to return to the win column as UWA (3-1, 1-1 Gulf South Conference) travels to Valdosta State on Saturday, Sept. 26 for GSC action. The game will be aired on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu. A free video stream of the contest will be available at www.vstateblazers.tv.

This is the 28th meeting in the series between West Alabama and Valdosta State. The Blazers lead the series 26-1, including 23 straight wins over the Tigers. UWA seeks its first win in Valdosta in school history. The last meeting in the Azalea City was a 16-14 win for VSU on Oct. 21, 2006.

Both teams enter the contest following GSC losses last week. The Tigers dropped a five overtime decision, 38-30, at Southern Arkansas in the GSC Game of the Week. UWA and SAU fought through a scoreless first, three quarters of the game. Both teams posted touchdowns late in the fourth quarter before heading into the five extra sessions. The Red and White tallied 439 yards of total offense in the game, which ranks eighth under UWA head coach Bobby Wallace.

VSU dropped a 24-14 decision at Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. The loss was the second for the Blazers this season and their first in GSC play. The setback was the sixth for the Red and Black in the three seasons under David Dean. VSU allowed 502 yards of offense in loss.

UWA and the Blazers are each ranked in the top 30 in pass offense. The Red and White are ranked 22nd in the NCAA with VSU at 27th. Tiger signal caller Deon Williams is ranked fifth in the GSC in pass yards per game with 248.2 while VSU field captain Kellen Lewis, who is ranked eighth in the conference, is averaging 209.3 yards per contest.

West Alabama returns to Tiger Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 3 to face Lambuth in the first of a three-game homestand. Kickoff has been rescheduled for 4:00 p.m. The original start was slated for 6:00 p.m. The game will be carried on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.
