Tigers Picked Sixth in NCAA Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The University of West Alabama football team moved up to sixth in the second National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Football Regional Ranking as announced by the NCAA Division II Selection Committee. UWA (5-3, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) was picked ninth in the initial Super Regional Two Rankings last week.

GSC member North Alabama tops the poll followed by Albany State and Carson-Newman. Mars Hill and The University of North Carolina at Pembroke switched spots with MHC taking fourth and UNCP in fifth. Fort Valley State is seventh with Morehouse in eighth. Arkansas Tech is ranked 10th with Wingate rounding out the poll in 10th.

Earned access to the playoffs can be gained by a conference if a conference representative finishes in the top eight of the final super regional rankings.  If you would like further information on this matter, please refer to the Division II Football Championship Handbook, available at http://www.ncaa.org/wps/ncaa?ContentID=390#DII.

The Tigers are fresh off a 33-0 victory over the University of Arkansas at Monticello this past weekend. The shutout was the first over a GSC opponent since UWA blanked Delta State 10-0 in 1979. The last shutout for the Tigers came in 2006, a 65-0 win over Concordia College of Selma.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 as UWA travels to Carrollton, Ga. to face West Georgia in GSC play. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. The game will be aired on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.
