Tigers Fall 58-40 to Lambuth

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama football team fell 58-40 to Lambuth on Saturday, Oct. 3 in front of 4,728 at Tiger Stadium. The combined 98 points was the most in school history in a UWA (3-3) setback.

LU (5-0) scored on its first five possessions of the game, five straight TDs in the win. The Eagles led 28-0 before Tyler Kimbrough put the Tigers on the board with a 32 yard field goal with 3:58 remaining in the first half. Roderick Jefferson hauled in an 18 yard reception from Adam Wiese to put the Eagles up 34-3 at the half.

The Red and White scored on their opening possession of the second half as Gary Johnston rushed from 15 yards out to cut give the Tigers their first TD of the game. The score was the first on the opening possession of the second half for UWA since Arkansas Tech earlier this season.

The Eagles answered with 10 points and pushed the score out to 44-9 with 6:36 remaining in the third quarter. UWA narrowed the lead to 44-33 behind three straight TDs and a safety. During the 25-point swing, Shontral Ford and DeAntuan Matthews each returned interceptions for TDs, covering a combined 63 yards. The final two points of the scoring spurt came as the ball sailed over the head of LU punter Nathan O’Jibway for a safety.

The Tigers turned the ball over on the following kickoff, giving LU the ball on the Tiger 34 yard line. The Eagles responded to the field position by posting its seventh touchdown of the game as Brandon Okechukwu hauled in a 21 yard pass from David Hawkins. Ben Stallings added the final LU score of the night by pushing in a six yard run to end a 30 yard drive. Dameon Baylor wrapped the game scoring with a one yard rush.

UWA amassed a total of 546 yards on offense, the second most under Head Coach Bobby Wallace. The mark is only 28 yards short of tying the most, a standard set earlier this season at Belhaven.

J. D. Douglas led the Tiger defense in tackles with 10.5 on the night. It marks the fourth game this season that Douglas has led UWA. Tariq Ali concluded the night with nine tackles and an interception, one of four for the Red and White in the game.

West Alabama returns to conference play on Saturday, Oct. 10 as the Tigers host #25 Delta State. Kickoff against the Statesmen is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The game will be aired on FOX Sports, WSLY 104.9-FM and at athletics.uwa.edu.
