LIVINGSTON,
Ala. -- University of West Alabama Cross
Country Coach Don Medeiros announced the signing of the first
three members of the 2007 recruiting class, as Austin Enriquez of
Starr’s Mill (GA) High School,
Jonathan Sellers
of Lithia Springs (GA) High School and West Lauderdale High School’s
Corey Rigdon signed with UWA.
“Both Austin and
Corey should strengthen our roster for next season,” Medeiros
said. “Signing a runner of Austin’s caliber is a
huge boost for a young program such as ours. His
successes will help attract other good runners to
UWA and help strengthen the team in the years to
come.
“Corey is also a
very talented runner. He’s a very versatile athlete
that will really help strengthen the top of our
lineup.”
“I think Jonathan
will prove to be a very important part of our
re-building program at UWA,” Medeiros said. “He is a
solid runner who shows up to work hard every day and
that kind of attitude can be contagious. We feel
most fortunate to have him join us.”
Enriquez is the
2006 Georgia AAAA state champion in cross country,
with a personal best time of 15:45 for the 5000
meters. He
has also run 9:35 for 3200 meters in track as well as 4:30
for 1600 meters while winning state championships in
those events.
Rigdon claimed the
State crown in Mississippi in the mile, while also
running under 16 minutes in the 5K and 32:09 in the 10K.
Sellers, who
finished sixth in the 2005 AAAA meet, has a personal best
cross country time of 16:06 and he has run 32:26 for 10k
on the road.
Dr. Medeiros also
noted that recruiting efforts are not finished for
the coming year.
“We hope to sign
two or three more solid runners to round out our
squad. It is exciting to see our program taking
these first steps toward improvement and we hope to
move up into the upper echelons of the GSC in the
next couple of years.”
