Washington Honored by Gulf South Conference

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The University of West Alabama’s Ashton Washington was named Gulf South Conference East Division Player of the Week for her accomplishments in the West Florida Holiday Classic, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.

Washington helped the Tigers (4-7) to a 1-1 record in the tournament, posting double figures in both contests, including a double-double against the University of Arkansas at Monticello. The Lexington, Miss.-native posted 13 points and 12 rebounds against the Cotton Blossoms in a 75-63 win to open the classic. The senior then posted a team-leading 11 points in a 62-59 setback against Henderson State. The double digit performance against the Lady Reddies was tied for best on the team with Danielle Baldwin.

The Pre-Season All-GSC honoree is leading the Red and White with 14.9 points a contest and 9.3 rebounds this season. Washington is currently ranked second in rebounds and third in scoring in the conference.

Washington becomes the second Tiger to be named GSC East Division Player of the Week, as fellow senior Jessica Thompson received the honor the first week of the season. This marks the third time in her career that Washington has received the honor.

West Alabama returns to action on Thursday, January 3rd, as the Tigers host second ranked Delta State at 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall.
