LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University
of West Alabama women's basketball team dropped
a 68-54 decision on Saturday afternoon against
14th-ranked Valdosta State in Gulf South
Conference East action at Pruitt Hall. Jessica
Thompson led the Tigers (11-14, 6-4 GSC) with 13
points, placing her four points shy of the
1,000-career point plateau.
Dominique Whitfield led UWA with
10 rebounds in the loss, which placed UWA in
third in GSC East Division with two games
remaining in conference action.
Carley Peterson and Leschelle
Matthews each posted 12 points for the Lady
Blazers, as Michelle Thompson had 11 points.
Khaleh Thomas had eight boards for the VSU.
Leading 30-23 at the half, VSU
opened the second half with a 10-0 run to extend
its lead to 40-23 in the first three minutes of
the second half before reaching a its largest
lead of the game, 23 points, with 10:30
remaining in the contest.
The Red and White chipped away
at the Lady Blazer lead, narrowing to 14 points
in the latter minutes of the second half.
VSU opened the contest on a 13-6
run, but a 7-4 spurt by UWA brought the margin
to three points, but the Lady Blazers answered
with a 10-2 dash extending its lead to double
digits, 11 points, with less than four to play
in the opening stanza. The Tigers strung
together a 7-3 run to cut the double digit lead
to seven at the break.
West Alabama returns to action
on Monday, February 25, as the Tigers travel to
West Florida for its last road trip of the
regular season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The
game will be carried on Y-104.9-FM. |
