LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The
University of West Alabama women's basketball
team dropped a 91-71 decision to the University
of West Georgia on Monday evening, suffering its
first Gulf South Conference loss of the season.
The Red and White (5-11, 1-1 GSC)
were led by Dominique Whitfield with 15 points.
Ashton Washington poured in 14 points with 12
coming from Jessica Thompson and 10 from Jenni
Thomley. Danielle Baldwin led the way on the
boards with six rebounds.
Tia Jackson paced West Georgia
(15-2, 2-0 GSC) with 22 points, LaShandra McCoy
chimed in 20 points. Ashley Huff pulled down 10
rebounds for the Wolves to go along with her 17
points.
UWA which trailed by 21 points
at the half, found itself down by 26 in the
first three minutes of the second half to the
Wolves. The Red and White made a run at the UWG
lead, narrowing the margin to 18 points on a
trey from Jessica Thompson with 12:57 remaining
in the second stanza. The visiting Wolves
answered the Tigers run by extending its margin
to 27 points with just under nine minutes
remaining in the half. UWA again made a push at
the deficit, cutting it to 14 points late in the
second half.
UWG opened the contest on a 36-8
run, reaching its largest lead of the half. The
Tigers made a 12-2 push to bring the margin down
to 17 points, 40-23, but a 10-6 run pushed the
lead back out to 50-29 at the intermission.
West Alabama returns to action
on Monday, January 21, as the Tigers take to the
road for their first conference contest away
from Pruitt Hall, traveling to North Alabama.
