CARROLLTON, Ga. – The battle between the top
two teams in the Gulf South Conference East
Division lived up to its billing as the Tigers
of West Alabama put up a valiant effort against
No. 10 West Georgia, but came up short with a
76-65 setback.
UWA (10-13,
5-3 GSC) had the Wolves on the ropes in the
final half and took its only lead of the half at
39-38. UWG (22-2, 8-0) responded to each Tiger
run with a scoring spurt of its own. The Red
and White trailed 52-50 at the 9:27 mark, but
UWG went on a 14-2 run to take its largest lead
of the half. The no-quit Tigers bounced back to
trim the deficit down to 70-65 with just over a
minute remaining before dropping the 11-point
decision. With the win by the Wolves, they
clinch the 2008 GSC East Division crown.
Omeshia
Frost came off the bench to score a season-high
16 points in the setback. Frost, a junior from
Lawrenceville, Ga., has scored in double figures
in back-to-back contests with her 12 points last
Monday in the North Alabama win. Senior Jessica
Thompson also registered 16 points on the stat
sheet. Ashton Washington inched closer to the
1,000-career points plateau with nine points to
her credit. The senior from Lexington, Miss.
needs just 13 points to reach that feat.
Washington also pulled down six rebounds while
Dominique Whitfield led UWA in rebounding with
nine boards.
The Tigers return to action
on Monday, Feb. 18, traveling to Huntsville,
Ala. to face UAH. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
