LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The University of West Alabama women's basketball team picked up its third conference win of the season, as Tigers (7-12, 3-2 Gulf South Conference) down West Florida 62-54 on Monday evening at Pruitt Hall.

Irimar Hernandez led the Red and White in scoring with 14 points, as Jessica Thompson chimed in 13 points. Ashton Washington led the Tigers on the board with eight rebounds. Tara Russ led all scores with 20 points for UWF (8-12, 1-4 GSC) with Chelsea Patterson adding in 14 points. Samantha Schlaegel paced the Argos on the glass with 10 rebounds.

Leading 29-22 at the intermission, UWA pushed its lead out to 10 points before claiming it's largest of the outing, 13 points, with under 12 minutes remaining in the contest on a trey from Hernandez. UWF chipped at the deficit, narrowing the margin to five points with less than two minutes remaining in the contest. The Red and White closed the contest on a 5-2 to run to claim the eight point victory.

The Argos opened the contest on an 8-4 run, but UWA made a 5-0 run to grab its first lead of the contest at 9-8. A pair of free throws from Dominique Whitfield and Valerie Harris and the back end of a two shot trip to the charity stripe from Hernandez provided the five consecutive points. After UWF took back a one point advantage, the Tigers went on a 14-5 run to hold an eight point margin, 23-15, with 6:18 remaining before the break.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, February 2nd, as the Tigers travel GSC Divisional and in-state foe Montevallo. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on Y-104.9-FM.
