LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The
University of West Alabama women's basketball
team picked up its third conference win of the
season, as Tigers (7-12, 3-2 Gulf South
Conference) down West Florida 62-54 on Monday
evening at Pruitt Hall.
Irimar Hernandez led the Red and
White in scoring with 14 points, as Jessica
Thompson chimed in 13 points. Ashton Washington
led the Tigers on the board with eight rebounds.
Tara Russ led all scores with 20 points for UWF
(8-12, 1-4 GSC) with Chelsea Patterson adding in
14 points. Samantha Schlaegel paced the Argos on
the glass with 10 rebounds.
Leading 29-22 at the
intermission, UWA pushed its lead out to 10
points before claiming it's largest of the
outing, 13 points, with under 12 minutes
remaining in the contest on a trey from
Hernandez. UWF chipped at the deficit, narrowing
the margin to five points with less than two
minutes remaining in the contest. The Red and
White closed the contest on a 5-2 to run to
claim the eight point victory.
The Argos opened the contest on
an 8-4 run, but UWA made a 5-0 run to grab its
first lead of the contest at 9-8. A pair of free
throws from Dominique Whitfield and Valerie
Harris and the back end of a two shot trip to
the charity stripe from Hernandez provided the
five consecutive points. After UWF took back a
one point advantage, the Tigers went on a 14-5
run to hold an eight point margin, 23-15, with
6:18 remaining before the break.
West Alabama returns to action
on Saturday, February 2nd, as the Tigers travel
GSC Divisional and in-state foe Montevallo.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be
