LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team travels to Montevallo,
Ala. with eyes set on earning its fourth
consecutive and 15th all-time berth
into the Gulf South Conference Tournament.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at UM’s BankTrust
Arena. The game will be carried on WZNJ 106.5-FM
with live stats available at athletics.uwa.edu.
A win over the Lady Falcons would secure the
feat and avenge a 65-57 loss at Pruitt Hall
earlier this season. Previous to the setback on
January 29, 2009, the Red and White had rattled
off seven straight wins over its eastern
neighbor.
UWA is 28-14 against UM all-time and 12-8 on its
in-state foes home floor. The Tigers haven’t
been swept by UM since the 1998-99 season and
haven’t dropped a contest at UM since 2004.
Currently UWA and UM have identical 4-7
conference records, but the Lady Falcons have
already locked up a spot in Southaven, Miss.,
their first appearance in the conference
tournament since the 2004-05 season. It marks
the fourth visit to the GSC Tournament for UM.
Valerie Harris, nominee for All-GSC, paces UWA
with 15.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game,
which rank eighth and seventh in the GSC
respectively. Last week, the Lake, Miss.-native
averaged 9.5 points and a team-leading 9.0
rebounds per contest. 9.5 scoring clip ranked
second best on the team behind Danielle
Baldwin’s 14 points in the two games. Baldwin, a
Jackson, Miss.-product, also tallied six steals
last weekend, pushing her into sixth in the GSC
in swipes. Jessie Clark moved into the GSC
leader’s column over the weekend, as the
freshman from New Market, Ala. is seventh in
three-point field goal percentage, shooting
39.7-percent from behind the arc. |
