FLORENCE,
Ala. – Four players recorded double figures
in scoring for the University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team, led by 13 points from
Jessica Thompson, as the Tigers (6-11, 2-1 Gulf
South Conference) turned back North Alabama
(8-9, 2-2 GSC),72-51, in Flowers Hall on the UNA
campus. The win marked the first victory for the
Red and White in Florence since the 2005-06
season.
Jenni Thomley,
Irimar Hernandez and Omeshia Frost rounded out
the double digit production with 11 points each.
Ashton Washington and Dominique Whitfield led
the charge on the boards with nine a piece in
the contest.
Leading by 19
at the half, UWA pushed out to its largest lead
of the outing, 24 points, with 12:46 remaining
in the game on a jumper by Thomley. The Red and
White saw its margin narrowed after the
10-minute mark, as on several different
occasions the Lions trimmed the deficit to 15
points, the last coming with 3:47 remaining in
the contest. UWA closed the final 3:45 on a 12-6
run to clinch its second conference victory of
the season.
UWA opened the
contest on a 9-4 dash, but a quick two scoring
trips down the floor for UNA pulled the Lions
within one point at 9-8. The Red and White
proceeded to answer the quick spurt of the Lions
with an 11-3 run to extend the lead back out to
20-11. The Tigers outscored the Purple and Gold
16-6 down the stretch to stand 36-17 at the
intermission.
West Alabama
returns to action on Saturday, January 26th,
as the Tigers travel to Valdosta, Ga. to take on
the Lady Blazers. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
