UWA Topples North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – Four players recorded double figures in scoring for the University of West Alabama women’s basketball team, led by 13 points from Jessica Thompson, as the Tigers (6-11, 2-1 Gulf South Conference) turned back North Alabama (8-9, 2-2 GSC),72-51, in Flowers Hall on the UNA campus. The win marked the first victory for the Red and White in Florence since the 2005-06 season.

Jenni Thomley, Irimar Hernandez and Omeshia Frost rounded out the double digit production with 11 points each. Ashton Washington and Dominique Whitfield led the charge on the boards with nine a piece in the contest.

Leading by 19 at the half, UWA pushed out to its largest lead of the outing, 24 points, with 12:46 remaining in the game on a jumper by Thomley. The Red and White saw its margin narrowed after the 10-minute mark, as on several different occasions the Lions trimmed the deficit to 15 points, the last coming with 3:47 remaining in the contest. UWA closed the final 3:45 on a 12-6 run to clinch its second conference victory of the season.

UWA opened the contest on a 9-4 dash, but a quick two scoring trips down the floor for UNA pulled the Lions within one point at 9-8. The Red and White proceeded to answer the quick spurt of the Lions with an 11-3 run to extend the lead back out to 20-11. The Tigers outscored the Purple and Gold 16-6 down the stretch to stand 36-17 at the intermission.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday, January 26th, as the Tigers travel to Valdosta, Ga. to take on the Lady Blazers. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. CST. The game will be aired on Y-104.9-FM.
