LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of
West Alabama women’s basketball team notched
its fifth Gulf South Conference win of the
season by dropping North Alabama 77-49 at
Pruitt Hall on Monday afternoon. The Tigers
(10-12, 5-2 GSC) had four players in double
figures led by Valerie Harris with 16
points.
Omeshia
Frost had 12 points, as Dominique Whitfield
and Jessica Thompson each added 10 points in
the contest.
Leading
31-22 at the half, UWA held off a Lions
(11-12, 4-4 GSC) surge over the first five
minutes of the contest before pushing its
lead out to 12 points on a try from Frost
with 12:28 remaining in the game. The Tiger
added to its lead, reaching 22 points on a
three from Irimar Hernandez before taking
its largest lead of the game, 28 points, on
a jumper from Amber Walker.
After
exchanging the lead over the first six
minutes of the outing, UNA went on an 8-0
run to reach its largest lead of the game,
eight points, but the Red and White answered
with a 9-0 run over the next 3:30 to grab
its first lead since the 15:47 mark, 16-15.
UNA regained the lead behind a 7-2 run with
6:29 remaining. UWA took control of the
contest, closing the first half on a 13-0
run to hold a 31-22 lead at the break.
The
contest was also a fund raiser to help raise
money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
Pledges were taken before the game for each
three-pointer hit between the two teams. On
the night, UNA and UWA combined for 12
three-pointers. All proceeds were donated to
the cancer fund.
West
Alabama returns to action on Saturday,
February, 16, as the Tigers travel to West
Georgia. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
