MONTEVALLO, Ala. – A 14-6,
West Alabama run over the final four and a
half minutes leads the UWA women’s
basketball team to a 75-67 victory over
Montevallo at UM’s People’s Bank and Trust
Arena on Saturday evening. The win improves
the Tigers to 8-12 overall and 4-2 in the
Gulf South Conference.
Four Tigers
scored in double figures, led by a
career-high 19 points from Valerie Harris.
Jessica Thompson poured in 13 points with
Omeshia Frost adding 11 points and Jenni
Thomley supplying 10 points. Ashton
Washington pulled down 16 rebounds, tying
her season-high.
UWA led 36-26
at the intermission, but a 19-8 run by the
Lady Falcons (5-16, 1-5 GSC) in the first
four minutes of the second half gave UM its
first lead of the contest at 45-44. The
Tigers regained the lead at 46-45 on a
jumper from Frost, but the margin would be
short lived as Alex Vollmeier hit a jumper
to give UM a 47-46 lead. The Lady Falcons
held the lead for almost nine minutes before
a layup from Washington tied the game at
61-all. Harris gave UWA the lead back,
63-61, on a pair of free throws with 3:48
remaining in the second stanza.
The Red and
White opened the contest on an 18-4 capped
by a jumper from Thomley with 12:20
remaining in the opening stanza. The Tigers
would increase their lead as another trey by
Thomley, with just over three minutes to
play before the break, gave UWA its largest
lead of the contest, 17 points, at 35-18. UM
answered with an 8-1 run, led by Jamie
Graham and Tiffany Johnson, to close the gap
to 10 points at the half.
West Alabama
returns to action on Tuesday, February 5, as
the Tigers host Mobile in non-conference
play. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. The game
