MONTEVALLO,
Ala. – Jessica Thompson’s career-high 41
points were not enough, as the University of
West Alabama women’s basketball team fell in
overtime to Gulf South Conference West Division
foe Harding, 98-92, in the second day of the UM
Coca-Cola Classic at People’s Bank and Trust
Arena.
Thompson, a
Valhermoso Springs, Ala.-native, shot over
70-percent from behind the arc on the night,
converting on 12 of 17 three-pointers.
Leading much
of the game, UWA (0-2) saw a six point advantage
with under a minute to play in the game
evaporate when HU’s Kelsea Lyda hit a trey, with
three-seconds remaining, to tie the contest at
83 all and send it to the extra five minute
session.
The Bisons
(2-0) pushed out to a three point lead in the
first two and a half minutes in the extra frame.
The Tigers answered the early run and took a one
point edge, 89-88, at the 2:08 mark, on a jumper
from Irimar Hernandez, but Harding would go on a
10-2 run over the final two minutes to pull out
the victory.
UWA, which
held as much as a 14-point lead in the contest,
shot 44-percent from the floor on the night.
Hernandez posted 16 points for the Tigers with
Ashton Washington and Dominique Whitfield each
adding 13 points. Whitfield, a Crystal Springs,
Miss-native, led the Red and White on the boards
with eight rebounds.
Garrison Lakyn
paced HU with 22 points, followed by 20 from
Lyda. Stacey Owens pulled down a game-leading 17
rebounds to go along with her 16 points for the
Bisons.
West Alabama
opens the home slate of the season on Saturday,
November 24, as the Tigers are visited by Auburn
Montgomery. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m. at Pruitt Hall.
