LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team returns to action on
Monday, February 18, as the Tigers (10-13, 5-3
Gulf South Conference) travel to the University
of Alabama in Huntsville for a key GSC East
Division game. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
The game can be heard on Y-104.9-FM.
This marks the
second meeting between the two in-state schools,
as the Red and White claimed a 76-74 overtime
thriller in Pruitt Hall in the opening weekend
of conference play. Ashton Washington hit the
game-winning jumper with seven seconds remaining
in OT to lift the Tigers to the victory. Irimar
Hernandez, one of four Tigers in double figures
scoring, was the leader for UWA, supplying 14
points.
UWA enters the
contest after having its four-game win streak
snapped at West Georgia on Saturday night,
76-65. The setback dropped the Red and White
back to third in the division behind #13
Valdosta State (20-4, 6-2 GSC) and UWG, who has
clinched the divisional crown. Jessica Thompson
and Omeshia Frost led the Tigers in scoring with
16 points each, as Dominique Whitfield proved to
be the catalyst on the glass with nine rebounds.
Washington and
Thompson continue to lead the Red and White in
scoring, each averaging double digits.
Washington is turning out 13.3 points a game to
go along with her team-leading 8.9 boards a
game, while Thompson is supplying 12.6 points a
contest.
UAH enters the
contest fresh off an 87-64 win over Montevallo,
that also snapped a four-game conference losing
streak. The Lady Chargers last win in the GSC
came in a 55-45 victory over VSU on January 21.
LaTonya
McKinney and Ashley Boykin lead the charge for
UAH, each scoring in double figures this season.
McKinney is averaging a team-leading 13.2 points
a game, while Boykin is dumping in 11.6 a
contest. Michelle Snow leads the way on the
boards with six rebounds a game.
Following the
Monday night match-up, West Alabama returns to
action on Saturday, February 23, as the Tigers
host Valdosta State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2
p.m. |
