LIVINGSTON, Ala. –
The University of West Alabama women’s
basketball team erased a 26-point deficit to
snap a four-game losing streak and earn its
first conference win of the season in a 76-74
overtime win of the University of Alabama in
Huntsville at Pruitt Hall on Saturday afternoon.
UWA (5-10, 1-0
Gulf South Conference) held UAH to only seven
made shots in the second half and then outscored
the Lady Chargers 11-9 in overtime to pull out
the victory. Under Head Coach Amanda Marks, the
Red and White improves to 5-2 in conference home
openers and 4-3 in conference lid-lifters in her
seven seasons at the helm.
Knotted at
74-74 in the extra session, Ashton Washington
hit a jumper with seven seconds remaining to
lift the Tigers to the victory. The two points
were two of her 10 on the night. Irimar
Hernandez paced the Tigers with 14 points,
Jessica Thompson supplied 12 and Valerie Harris
rounded out the double digit scoring efforts
with 11.
Trailing 74-71
with 3:14 remaining the extra period, UWA scored
the final five points of the contest in the win.
In the second
half, the Tigers began narrowing the UAH
12-point deficit, outscoring the Lady Chargers
15-3 down the stretch, capped by two clutch free
throws from Thompson with eight seconds left to
play in regulation.
UAH reached
its 26-point lead in the first five minutes of
the second stanza, but a 19-6 run cut the lead
down to 13 points with 8:21 remaining in the
second half. UAH pushed the lead back out to 17
before UWA made its run to force overtime, as
the Red and White outscored UAH 22-5 in the
final seven minutes of regulation.
West Alabama
returns to action on Monday, January 14, the
Tigers host West Georgia at 5:30 p.m. in Pruitt
Hall. |
