UWA Opens Conference Slate; Hosts UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team opens Gulf South Conference play at Pruitt Hall, as the Tigers (4-10) host the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Saturday, January 12th at 2 p.m. UWA will host West Georgia on Monday, January 14th, to close out the opening weekend of conference play.

The Red and White look to snap a four-game losing streak, the longest of the season, in the conference lid-lifter. Under Head Coach Amanda Marks, the Tigers are 4-2 in conference, home openers and 3-3 in conference openers.

Leading the way for UWA this season is Pre-Season All-GSC East Division selection Ashton Washington. Washington, a native of Lexington, Miss., is averaging 15.3 points and 9.3 rebounds a contest. Joining Washington in double digits scoring is Jessica Thompson. The Valhermoso Springs, Ala.-native is recording 12.6 points a contest for the Tigers.

UAH enters Saturday’s affair with a 7-6 record and on a one-game win streak, downing Ouachita Baptist 62-56 in Huntsville, Ala. The Lady Chargers are led by Kristen Banes and Jacksonville State University transfer Tonya McKinney. McKinney, a Miami, Fla.-native, is averaging 13.4 points an outing, while the Ashland City, Tenn. product, Banes is averaging 10.5 points a contest. Banes is tied for the team lead in rebounds with Michelle Snow, each averaging 5.5 a contest.

West Georgia (13-2) travels to Montevallo, Ala. on Saturday afternoon to face the Lady Falcons before making the trip to Livingston two days later. The Wolves have four players averaging double figures in scoring, led by Ashley Huff with 15.5 a contest. Joining Huff, who also leads the team in rebounds with 8.1 an outing, are Tia Jackson with 14.9 points, LaShandra McCoy with 13.9 and Dominic Cranford with 12.7 points a contest.

Following the conference opening weekend, West Alabama gets a week off before traveling to North Alabama on Monday, January 21st for a 6 p.m. tip-off at UNA’s Flowers Hall. The game will be carried on WSLY 104.9 FM and also at athletics.uwa.edu.
