Amanda Marks reached career No.
200 in victories and the
University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team snapped
a season-long three-game skid
with a 62-52 victory over
Montevallo in a Gulf South
Conference game at the Peoples
Bank & Trust Arena.
“I am more
proud of the team picking up a
road victory than of me getting
that 200th win,”
Marks said. “This past week we
spent a lot of time on our
offense and defense. Right now,
I feel like we haven’t played
our best ball.”
The Tigers,
who struggled in their past
three appearances, opened the
game hot. West Alabama began the
contest on a 12-0 run, capped by
a pair of free throws by Brandi
Humprey. Montevallo’s first
field goal came 5:01 into the
game on a basket by Jennifer
Hendricks. West Alabama took its
largest lead of the half, 19-4,
with 8:04 remaining on a two
free throws by Jamie Walker.
Trailing,
23-7, Montevallo used a 10-0
run, capped by a layup by
Alexandra Vollmeir to cut the
deficit to 23-17. Jamie Walker
scored on a pair of free throws
with less than a minute
remaining in the first half as
the Tigers took a 25-17 lead at
the break.
West
Alabama, ranked No. 8 in the
first NCAA Division II Regional
Poll, took a 37-26 lead on a
free throw by Walker with 13:23
remaining, but the Lady Falcons
answered with a 7-0 run, to
close the gap to 37-34.
The
Tigers, who won for the first
time on the road this season,
responded with a 16-4 run,
capped by a fastbreak layup by
Wennica Foster with 6:12 left,
giving West Alabama a 53-38
lead. Montevallo couldn’t get
closer than eight points during
the final six minutes as West
Alabama won on the road for the
first time this season.
Walker
paced all scorers with 22 points
and eight rebounds. Foster
finished with 12 points, while
Ashton Washington had 11 points
and nine boards.
Veronica
Jackson had a double-double 15
points and 12 rebounds to lead
Montevallo (10-9 overall, 3-3
GSC). Malissa Harris added 11
points.
West
Alabama (13-6, 3-3) returns to
action Wednesday, Jan. 31 with a
5:30 tip-off against Concordia
College in a non-conference
game.
