Marks reaches 200th victory in Tigers win

Final Box Score

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Amanda Marks reached career No. 200 in victories and the University of West Alabama women’s basketball team snapped a season-long three-game skid with a 62-52 victory over Montevallo in a Gulf South Conference game at the Peoples Bank & Trust Arena.

“I am more proud of the team picking up a road victory than of me getting that 200th win,” Marks said. “This past week we spent a lot of time on our offense and defense. Right now, I feel like we haven’t played our best ball.”

The Tigers, who struggled in their past three appearances, opened the game hot. West Alabama began the contest on a 12-0 run, capped by a pair of free throws by Brandi Humprey. Montevallo’s first field goal came 5:01 into the game on a basket by Jennifer Hendricks. West Alabama took its largest lead of the half, 19-4, with 8:04 remaining on a two free throws by Jamie Walker.

Trailing, 23-7, Montevallo used a 10-0 run, capped by a layup by Alexandra Vollmeir to cut the deficit to 23-17. Jamie Walker scored on a pair of free throws with less than a minute remaining in the first half as the Tigers took a 25-17 lead at the break.

West Alabama, ranked No. 8 in the first NCAA Division II Regional Poll, took a 37-26 lead on a free throw by Walker with 13:23 remaining, but the Lady Falcons answered with a 7-0 run, to close the gap to 37-34.

The Tigers, who won for the first time on the road this season, responded with a 16-4 run, capped by a fastbreak layup by Wennica Foster with 6:12 left, giving West Alabama a 53-38 lead. Montevallo couldn’t get closer than eight points during the final six minutes as West Alabama won on the road for the first time this season.

Walker paced all scorers with 22 points and eight rebounds. Foster finished with 12 points, while Ashton Washington had 11 points and nine boards.

Veronica Jackson had a double-double 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Montevallo (10-9 overall, 3-3 GSC). Malissa Harris added 11 points.

West Alabama (13-6, 3-3) returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 31 with a 5:30 tip-off against Concordia College in a non-conference game.
