Washington Hits Game Winner to Lift UWA Over Mobile

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – A game-winning jumper by Ashton Washington with one second remaining led the University of West Alabama women's basketball team to a 76-75 win over Mobile in the Tigers (9-12) final regular season, non-conference contest of the season at Pruitt Hall on Tuesday evening.

With seven seconds remaining in the contest, Mobile's Angela Bounds toed the free throw line for a one and one opportunity. Bounds hit the front of the rim and UWA's Washington grabbed the rebound and called timeout. On the Tiger's inbound play Washington took the ball down the floor for the game-winning, fade away shot.

Valerie Harris led the Red and White with 20 points followed by 18 from Jessica Thompson and 17 from Dominique Whitfield. Washington finished the contest with 11 points and 12 rebounds for her 18th career double-double.

Leading 43-38 at the half, UWA found itself down one point in the first five minutes of the second half, behind a 10-4 run by Mobile. Danielle Goodly hit a jumper at the 15:16 mark of the second half, but Washington answered with a jumper on the other end for the Red and White to reclaim the lead 17-seconds later. UM's Anna Maddox once again gave the Lady Rams the one point advantage with 14:43 remaining in the contest with a 15-footer.

Over the next four minutes, UM strung together a 15-4 run to reach its largest lead of the game, 12 points, on a jumper by Bounds with 10:47 remaining.

The Tigers began to chip away at the lead and behind a 20-7 run pulled within one point on a layup by Harris with 4:27 remaining. Whitfield placed UWA on top on a three-point play with 2:36 remaining. Mobile's Sherri McIntosh answered 24-seconds later on a layup to set up the dramatic finish.

UWA led much of the first half, reaching its largest lead of the game, 7 points, with 11:21 remaining before the break. UM closed the gap, tying the contest at 36-36 with two minutes to play in the opening stanza, but a 5-2 run by the Tigers gave UWA its three point advantage at the break.
