UWA Turns Back Martin Methodist

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team snapped a two-game, losing streak by avenging an earlier season loss in a 68-51 defeat of Martin Methodist on Saturday afternoon at Pruitt Hall. The 17 point margin of victory was a season-high for UWA, which now stands at 2-4 on the year.

Jessica Thompson paced the Red and White with 16 points, as Dominique Whitfield, Jenni Thomley and Irimar Hernandez each added 10 points. Ashton Washington led the way on the boards with 16, just three shy of tying her career-high. Whitney Robison paced MMC’s attack with 15 points and nine rebounds on the night.

Trailing by 16 points at the intermission, the RedHawks opened the second half on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 13 points. UWA answered with an 8-4 run to push the lead back out to 17 points with 12:14 remaining in the contest. MMC’s Robison would connect on a free throw to cut the lead back one notch, 51-35, but the Tigers would press the lead out to 21 points on a three point play by Hernandez and then a pair of free throws from Whitfield.

A layup by Washington, two of her five points in the contest, gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game, 23 points, with 8:43 remaining in the contest at 58-35.

The Red and White shot 45-percent from the floor to Martin Methodist’s 30-percent for the game.

UWA opened the contest with the first basket, a free throw from Thomley, but a trey from Kaneka Brown put the RedHawks up by two. Valerie Harris answered with a jumper to knot the game at 3-3. MMC would regain the lead on a jumper by Vashun Wilkins and the RedHawks would hold the lead until the 13:21 mark of the opening stanza. Hernandez would score on a layup to give UWA an 11-9 lead. The Tigers would not trail the remainder of the contest.

West Alabama returns to action on Wednesday, December 12th, as the Tigers close out a three-game homestand against Georgia Southwestern. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. UWA wraps up its pre-holiday action in the Delta State hosted, Lloyd Clark Classic. The Tigers face tournament host DSU at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 17th and will conclude the tournament against North Georgia on Tuesday, December 18th at 4 p.m.
