LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team snapped a two-game,
losing streak by avenging an earlier season loss
in a 68-51 defeat of Martin Methodist on
Saturday afternoon at Pruitt Hall. The 17 point
margin of victory was a season-high for UWA,
which now stands at 2-4 on the year.
Jessica
Thompson paced the Red and White with 16 points,
as Dominique Whitfield, Jenni Thomley and Irimar
Hernandez each added 10 points. Ashton
Washington led the way on the boards with 16,
just three shy of tying her career-high. Whitney
Robison paced MMC’s attack with 15 points and
nine rebounds on the night.
Trailing by 16
points at the intermission, the RedHawks opened
the second half on a 5-2 run to cut the lead to
13 points. UWA answered with an 8-4 run to push
the lead back out to 17 points with 12:14
remaining in the contest. MMC’s Robison would
connect on a free throw to cut the lead back one
notch, 51-35, but the Tigers would press the
lead out to 21 points on a three point play by
Hernandez and then a pair of free throws from
Whitfield.
A layup by
Washington, two of her five points in the
contest, gave the Tigers their largest lead of
the game, 23 points, with 8:43 remaining in the
contest at 58-35.
The Red and
White shot 45-percent from the floor to Martin
Methodist’s 30-percent for the game.
UWA opened the
contest with the first basket, a free throw from
Thomley, but a trey from Kaneka Brown put the
RedHawks up by two. Valerie Harris answered with
a jumper to knot the game at 3-3. MMC would
regain the lead on a jumper by Vashun Wilkins
and the RedHawks would hold the lead until the
13:21 mark of the opening stanza. Hernandez
would score on a layup to give UWA an 11-9 lead.
The Tigers would not trail the remainder of the
contest.
West Alabama
returns to action on Wednesday, December 12th,
as the Tigers close out a three-game homestand
against Georgia Southwestern. Tip-off is
scheduled for 5:30 p.m. UWA wraps up its
pre-holiday action in the Delta State hosted,
Lloyd Clark Classic. The Tigers face tournament
host DSU at 6 p.m. on Monday, December 17th
and will conclude the tournament against North
Georgia on Tuesday, December 18th at
4 p.m. |
