TUSCALOOSA,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team took to the hardwood on
Wednesday, October 31, against the University of
Alabama in an exhibition contest, but dropped
the decision to the Crimson Tide 80-53 at
Coleman Coliseum.
All-GSC
Pre-Season selection Ashton Washington led the
way for the Tigers, posting 12 points and nine
rebounds, while newcomer Danielle Baldwin added
11 points in her first game with the Red and
White. Jessica Thompson tallied nine points on
the night with Valerie Harris and Irimar
Hernandez totaling eight points each.
The Tide was
paced by Tierney Jenkins and Talisha Chandler,
each with 18 points. Chandler also chimed in a
team-leading 16 rebounds with Dedrea Magee
adding 10 boards.
UWA held its
own on the floor with the Division I,
Southeastern Conference foe through much of the
first half. The Tigers went back and forth with
the Tide and with 11 minutes remaining in the
opening stanza, held a 16-15 margin over UA.
The Tide would
go on a 12-2 run to push the lead out to nine
points and headed into the locker-room up 11
points, 38-27, at the intermission. UA opened
the second half on an 11-4 run and never trailed
the remainder of the way.
West Alabama
opens the regular-season in the UM Coca Cola
Classic in Montevallo, Ala. The Tigers will face
Auburn University Montgomery on Friday, November
16th at 1:00 p.m. UWA will close the
tournament the following Saturday, as the Tigers
will face off with GSC West Division foe Harding
at 1:00 p.m. |
