West Alabama punches ticket to GSC Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The University of West Alabama women’s basketball team is set for its second consecutive trip to the Gulf South Conference Tournament, as the Tigers (19-8 overall, 7-5 GSC) prepare to face Western Division, No. 2-seed Arkansas Tech in a 12:30 p.m. contest on Thursday, March 1st at the DeSoto Civic Center.

UWA, which enters as the No. 3 seed from the Eastern Division after downing Montevallo at Pruitt Hall on Saturday, will face The Golden Suns (19-8, 11-3 GSC) for just the third time in the series.

This meeting also marks the second time that the two opposite division teams have squared off in the GSC Tournament, with the first meeting in the 2001 GSC Tournament in Tupelo, Miss. The Golden Suns, who would advance to the Finals before falling to Delta State, claimed a 76-45 win over the Tigers.

UWA is led by All-Gulf South Conference Eastern Division First Team selection Ashton Washington. The Lexington, Miss. native is averaging 12.1 points per game and leads the GSC in rebounds with 9.6 per contest, which ranks 27th in the country.

ATU is making its first appearance back in the GSC Tournament after claiming the 2003 crown. The Golden Suns have compiled a 13-4 all-time record in six GSC Tournament appearances, claiming two titles and has played in the championship game in all six appearances.

West Alabama, is making its 13th appearance and its second straight as the Tigers are 5-11 in the tournament and has made six semifinal appearances and lost in the championship game in 1987.

Both teams enter looking to improve their South Regional ranking as Arkansas Tech is ranked fifth and UWA is four spots back in ninth.

The Gulf South Conference has announced that all conference tournament basketball games will be broadcasted via the internet at $5.50 per a game.

The broadcasts will begin five minutes prior to tip-off if there are no overtimes. The Championship games on Sunday afternoon are the only contests free on the regular GSC-TV Live Network (CSS, CoxSports, WHCQ, MediaCom and TV-6), as they were during football season.
