LIVINGSTON,
Ala. – The University of West Alabama
women’s basketball team dropped a 76-74 overtime
decision to Arkansas Tech Saturday afternoon at
Pruitt Hall, despite a career-high 25 points
from Ashton Washington.
A jumper from
Ashley Grappe, in the paint, with time expiring
gave the Golden Suns (5-2) the 76-74 win,
snapping the Tigers (1-4) five-game, home win
streak, that dated back to last season.
Washington, a
Lexington, Miss.-native, led UWA with eight
rebounds to go along with her 25 points. Valerie
Harris added a career-high 14 points with
Jessica Thompson tallying 11 and Dominique
Whitfield supplying 10 points.
Krishna Baker
paced Tech with 17 points with Grappe adding 16.
Anna Baran led the way on the boards with nine
for the Golden Suns.
UWA grabbed a
68-67 lead in the extra session on a free throw
by Thompson, but the advantage would be short
lived as Gottsponer laid up a shot to give the
Golden Suns a point one lead. The Tigers Harris
returned the favor at the other end to give the
Red and White a one point lead at 70-69.
Another ATU
lay-up by Grappe gave the Golden Suns a 71-70
lead with 3:14 remaining in the extra stanza.
ATU would add to its lead and with just over two
minutes remaining, held a 73-70 advantage. UWA
answered with a 4-1 run over the next two and a
half minutes to tie the game. A pair of free
throws from Harris pulled UWA to within one. A
Grappe free throw pushed the lead back out to
74-72, but a Washington jumper with 24-seconds
knotted the contest at 74-74.
UWA, which led
32-27 at the intermission, shot 41-percent from
the floor in the contest to Arkansas Tech’s
52.5-percent. The Golden Suns out scored the
Tigers 40 to 35 in the second half, while
shooting 60-percent from the floor.
