Harris Named Second Team All-Gulf South Conference

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of West Alabama women’s basketball player Valerie Harris was named to the 2008-09 All-Gulf South Conference Second Team, as announced by the conference office on Monday morning. The teams were selected by the head coaches of the league.

Harris, a native of Lake, Miss., is one of 21 players named to the all-conference squads. With the honor, UWA extends its streak to 14 consecutive years with a student-athlete being named all-conference.

Harris leads UWA in scoring and rebounding with 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, which ranks eighth and seventh in the GSC respectively. The senior forward has recorded 37 career games in double figures, including six with 20-plus points, seven career 10-plus rebounding games and seven games in doubles-doubles. This season, she has led the Red and White in scoring 18 times and 20 games as the team leader on the boards. Harris rattled off 17 straight games with double digit scoring efforts.

UWA earned its fourth consecutive berth into the GSC Tournament and 15th all-time with a 56-54 win at Montevallo on Saturday. Harris led the team in scoring with 19 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with six boards.

West Alabama will face Harding on Wednesday, March 4 in the GSC Tournament. UWA looks to avenge an earlier loss this season to the Lady Bisons in Searcy, Ark.
