BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of
West Alabama women’s basketball player
Valerie Harris was named to the 2008-09
All-Gulf South Conference Second Team,
as announced by the conference office on
Monday morning. The teams were selected
by the head coaches of the league.
Harris, a native of Lake, Miss., is one
of 21 players named to the
all-conference squads. With the honor,
UWA extends its streak to 14 consecutive
years with a student-athlete being named
all-conference.
Harris
leads UWA in scoring and rebounding with
15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game,
which ranks eighth and seventh in the
GSC respectively. The senior forward has
recorded 37 career games in double
figures, including six with 20-plus
points, seven career 10-plus rebounding
games and seven games in
doubles-doubles. This season, she has
led the Red and White in scoring 18
times and 20 games as the team leader on
the boards. Harris rattled off 17
straight games with double digit scoring
efforts.
UWA
earned its fourth consecutive berth into
the GSC Tournament and 15th
all-time with a 56-54 win at Montevallo
on Saturday. Harris led the team in
scoring with 19 points and tied for the
team lead in rebounds with six boards.
West
Alabama will face Harding on Wednesday,
March 4 in the GSC Tournament. UWA looks
to avenge an earlier loss this season to
the Lady Bisons in Searcy, Ark. Tip-off
is set for 5:30 p.m. The game will be
broadcasted on WZNJ 106.5-FM. All
